Where could a STEM career take you? Studied STEM subjects at school > Chemical Engineering degree > Environmental Engineer Saving the environment with ultrasonic sound waves Soil contamination is not something we can see, but it can be very harmful to humans and the environment. While studying Chemical Engineering at university Andrea learnt about the damage chemicals can cause to the environment, and decided to turn her efforts instead to Environmental Engineering to help find solutions to some of that damage. She uses her skills in maths, physics andchemistry as an Environmental Engineer at CSIRO to develop processes to eliminate contamination in soils – like sound waves, transmitted at a frequency beyond a human’s normal hearing range, that travel through soil and create tiny bubbles that burst and eliminate toxic chemicals. She believes one of the best things about studying STEM has been the strong analytical skills she’s developed to help solve global challenges like environmental sustainability.
