We have been working with collaborators from across industry, research and government to co-design this mission. This summary reflects the mission in development and will continue to evolve. 
Build Australia’s clean hydrogen industry  
The mission would help build Australia’s clean hydrogen industry by scaling demand and driving down hydrogen cost to under $2 per kilogram to deliver a secure and resilient energy system and support our transition to a low emissions future
Opportunity 
The National Hydrogen Strategy was adopted by all federal, state and territory governments in 2019. It sets the vision for a clean, innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry that helps our nation transition to a sustainable and affordable low emissions future. 
It is estimated that a clean hydrogen industry will create more than 8,000 jobs, generate $11 billion a year in GDP, and result in avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to a third of Australia’s current fossil fuel emissions by 2050.   
Proposed mission focus  
• Hydrogen Knowledge Centre. A national resource for industry, government and the research community which highlights Australia’s hydrogen projects and provides modelling tools and educational resources  

• Feasibility studies and strategy. Delivering trusted independent strategic and technical analysis and advice to de-risk projects in partnership with industry experts and project proponents  

• Demonstration projects. Collaborative partnerships that validate hydrogen value chains and de-risk enabling technologies to inform investment and deployment decisions 

• Enabling science and technology. Delivering science and technology solutions and socio-economic analysis to remove barriers to hydrogen industry scaleup. 


Impact  
• Major new domestic and export industry creating urban and regional jobs and GDP growth 

• Avoided greenhouse gas emissions  

• A diversified energy system with increased energy security and resilience 


Collaborators 
Success depends on strong collaboration across industry, research and governments. We are currently engaging with advisory, funding, R&D and translation partners to establish this mission and welcome expressions of interest.
