We have been working with collaborators from across industry, research and government to co-design this mission. This summary reflects the mission in development and will continue to evolve. 
 
Increase Australia’s capacity to detect, treat, respond and recover from emerging infectious diseases   
The aim of this mission is to enhance Australia’s resilience to the health threats of infectious diseases by 2025
Opportunity 
We live in a volatile world where factors such as climate change, urbanisation and international travel are introducing new threats to human health. 
The emergence of new infectious diseases like COVID-19 have the potential for devastating impacts – loss of life, immense economic hardship and destabilisation of global financial markets, trade networks and supply chains.  
The Mission will deliver the information and tools needed for Australia to tackle current and future emerging infectious diseases. 
Proposed mission focus 
• Biosurveillance to build the diagnostic tools for early detection of potential threats through environmental monitoring and zoonotic disease tracking. 

•  Medical countermeasures activities will focus on rapid development and validation of diagnostics, vaccines & therapeutic products.   

• Disease research for insight into how emerging diseases evolve. 

• Expanding the systems for data-driven decision making.  


Proposed Impact  
• Improve the health and economic security of Australian and the region  

• Support growth of the Medical Technology (MedTech) sector across diagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic development and validation 

• Expand Australia’s skilled science and technology workforce 

• Improve Australia’s domestic capabilities in pandemic preparedness and vaccine/therapeutic resilience 

• Improve supply chain integrity for essential products and services
