R&D Hub December 2025 newsletter

Uniting sector leaders to build Australia’s critical minerals future

Access the report

In February 2025 the Hub convened a Critical Minerals R&D Symposium in Melbourne comprising 50 senior representatives from government, research, and industry to help set a forward-looking vision that could support the sector. The Executive Summary and Actions Report summarise the perspectives shared by participants and outlines proposed priority R&D opportunities. It identifies 10 priority areas where targeted research and strategic partnerships could unlock value, address bottlenecks, and ensure Australia is not left behind in the global race for critical minerals security. The Symposium findings and the Executive Summary and Action Report is informing the Hub’s ongoing stakeholder consultations on R&D priorities in response to a fast-moving critical minerals agenda.

AusIMM Policy Forum Report: R&D priorities for the nation’s critical minerals sector

The Hub, in collaboration with AusIMM, convened a Critical Minerals Research and Development Policy Forum in September. Held alongside AusIMM’s Critical Minerals Conference in Perth, the Forum brought together leaders from government, industry, universities and the research community. The Forum builds on the Hub’s prior collaboration with AusIMM to deliver Critical Conversations at the 2023 and 2024 Critical Minerals Conferences. It is the next step in our shared interest in setting the direction for critical minerals research and advances on the findings of the Hub’s National Symposium Critical Minerals Symposium held in Melbourne in February 2025.

R&D Hub hosts Government Roundtable

The Hub recently convened their second government roundtable of 2025, drawing more than 70 attendees from across Federal agencies.

Participants tuned in to hear updates on the Hub's latest research projects, outcomes, and impact, as well as its growing international engagement. The session highlighted how collaborative research is driving innovation and strengthening global connections, reinforcing the Hub's role as a catalyst for knowledge exchange and policy dialogue.

Shaping the next phase of impactful research

The Hub has hosted four research planning workshops to date with stakeholders from each science agency, focusing on progress and outcomes from current projects and identifying future priorities. These sessions brought together diverse expertise to shape the next phase of collaborative research.

Workshop themes included:

  • Mineral By-products – Hobart (Pictured)
  • High Purity Quartz / High Purity Silica – Melbourne
  • Metallisation – Melbourne
  • Rare Earth Elements – Perth

Together, these workshops are helping to refine the Hub's research agenda, ensuring alignment with national priorities and industry needs while strengthening collaboration across regions.

The Hub, together with CSIRO and Geoscience Australia, proudly joined the Australian delegation at EU Raw Materials Week 2025 in Brussels.

This year’s program focused on the EU’s key challenges in securing resilient critical minerals value chains, providing a platform for rich discussions and highlighting the important role Australia plays in addressing these global issues.

  • Showcasing Australian science: Helen McFarlane, CSIRO Discovery Program researcher, delivered a standout presentation at the EU Geological Survey event “Unlocking Europe’s mineral raw materials potential: New data, new projects, new opportunities.” She highlighted CSIRO’s pioneering work in clay‑hosted rare earth exploration and introduced new datasets and tools under development.
  • Strengthening global partnerships: Karol Czarnota from Geoscience Australia contributed as a panellist in the session “Strengthening resilience of space and defence value chains through international partnerships.” He underscored Australia’s reliability as a partner in securing critical minerals vital to space and defence industries.
  • Building collaboration: Carla Gonzalez Zlatar, Hub International Engagement Manager, met with several European partners to explore future opportunities for cooperation.

We extend our gratitude to Hillary Halim, DISR Counsellor in Brussels, and the Australian Embassy team for their invaluable support throughout this busy and successful week.

Australian Rare Earths Limited (AR3) has announced a major milestone at its Koppamurra project, with pilot-scale processing set to take place at ANSTO’s Lucas Heights facility. This work is being delivered under the Hub-funded 'Accelerating the Development of Australia's Rare Earth Resources' project, leveraging ANSTO’s bespoke rare earth processing capabilities. Supported by the Hub, this initiative is accelerating the development of Australia’s rare earth resources, particularly in the emerging cohort of ionic clay and clay-hosted rare earth projects.

From sports to science: Carly Baker’s inspirational journey to ANSTO

ANSTO Carly Baker Research Scientist
ANSTO Carly Baker Research Scientist

From a passion for sport to a career in science, Carly Baker’s journey reflects resilience, curiosity, and determination.

After overcoming a traumatic brain injury, Carly pursued chemistry and completed her PhD in polymer science/electrochemistry before joining ANSTO Minerals.

Today, she contributes to the Hub’s project Producing High-Tech Metals and Materials, developing processes to convert tungsten concentrate into a tungsten intermediate for metallisation at CSIRO. Her work bridges academic research with industrial innovation, strengthening Australia’s critical minerals capability.

For Carly, the Hub is more than a workplace, it’s a collaborative ecosystem driving impactful research, advancing sustainable mineral processing, and supporting Australia’s role in the global energy transition.
