UROP Newsletter: February 2023

UROP Team message

There were many notable achievements last year across the program, including: 18 new placements being created for talented students across Victoria; UROP's sponsor, CSL, extended its support for another three years; and the UROP Conference Day in July was the first face-to-face event delivered in two years. A lot to celebrate!

In February we will officially welcome our 2022 students and supervisors to UROP at the 2023 Welcome Forum. We're also looking forward to opening the next UROP round on 6 March.

UROP Conference Day 2022

The UROP Conference Day took place on 21 July 2022 in a hybrid format. Students presented in front of their fellow students and supervisors face-to-face, whilst being broadcast online for all other attendees. This year’s Conference Day also provided attendees with a much-missed networking opportunity. Current UROP students gathered during breaks, meeting each other in person for the first time, sharing their placement experiences and career plans. For some students, this was their first time presenting their research in front of an audience, so the event also contributed to the development of their communications skills.

Ruth Carr, CSIRO Education and Outreach Director, welcomed the new students and congratulated them on their achievements. Ruth also shared the news that CSL, UROP’s sponsor, has recently confirmed their commitment to continue to support the program for another three years. Michael Wilson, Vice President of Research at CSL, gave a speech outlining CSL’s commitment to the program and presented the students with their UROP certificates. The keynote speaker was Sean Solari, a former UROP student from 2019 who is currently undertaking a PhD at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research under the supervision of his UROP supervisor.
