CSIRO Industry PhD Program

This newsletter aims to:

  • Provide information to prospective university and industry partners who are interested in setting up and co-supervising iPhD projects.
  • Showcase current iPhD project opportunities to recruit iPhD students.
  • Support our existing project partners who are currently supervising iPhD students.

Program overview and update

The CSIRO Industry PhD Program brings together an industry partner, CSIRO, and a university to co-develop and co-support an industry-focused PhD project. In 2022, the program moved from its successful pilot phase to be funded under the Australian Government’s University Research Commercialisation Action Plan. In 2023, we are supporting 13 PhD projects with 12 industry partners, and nine universities across Australia.

We are excited to announce the approval of 50 projects from the February to May 2023 application round for commencement in early 2024. These projects have been co-designed by our CSIRO researchers, 46 industry partners and 26 universities and we are currently looking for students to fill project positions. These projects will be added to our scholarships page over the next few months.

PhD Scholarships Available

Successful students will receive admission to a university PhD program, a scholarship package of $46,000 per annum, a Project and Development package of $13,000 per annum, an Industry Engagement component with the industry partner and structured professional development and training. Project opportunities are available now for a 2024 commencement.

Next application intake - February 2024

Our next intake for university, CSIRO, and industry partners to submit formal applications for new projects will commence early February 2024. These projects are expected to start late 2024/early 2025.

We will hold a webinar on Wednesday 7 February 2024 to brief university researchers and industry professionals about the application process. Click here to register.

However, we encourage early discussions about project ideas prior to the webinar so we can best support your participation in the program. Please email our team at iPhD@csiro.au for an information session or please visit our website.

Subscribe to our newsletter for further updates and announcements, including further information about our upcoming webinar.

Program Rules update for 2024

For previous intakes, our criteria excluded Government and not-for-profit organisations. For our next intake in February 2024, we will be updating our criteria to allow Government and not-for profit entities where they can provide an industry relevant experience for the student. In addition, projects must demonstrate potential impact, align to Government and CSIRO priorities, increase research industry collaboration, and demonstrate that they are adequately resourced and feasible within timeframes.

Updated Program Rules will be released on our website prior to the commencement of the next round in February 2024.

Career and development training program update

One of the key features of the CSIRO Industry PhD is its embedded training program for iPhD students covering approximately 20 training days across four years.

In October and November 2023, we will run a half-day Ready to Launch online seminar for iPhD students which looks at innovation design for research. Then in mid-2024, CSIRO’s hallmark, ON Launch Camp for iPhD will follow. This two-day hands-on workshop has been tailored for our cohort. It shows students how to incorporate an industry-focus in their research by creating an impact framework for their projects. Current supervisors will be invited to attend the second day of the workshop to work with their students to advance the value proposition. At the end, students will have the opportunity to showcase the impact of their research. For further details about our training dates and events please visit the iPhD Training Calendar.
