In that case, consumers can have the option to sign up to a demand management program where the electricity company might turn off things like hot water, or pool pumps, or even air conditioners just for really short periods during the day to try and manage the peak demand on their network. In exchange for allowing a little bit of control of those appliances, the consumer will then get a really big discount on their electricity bill.
