Opportunity
It is estimated that a clean hydrogen industry will support 16,000 jobs by 2050, plus an additional 13,000 from the construction of related renewable energy infrastructure. Australian hydrogen production for export and domestic use could generate more than $50 billion in additional GDP by 2050, and result in avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to a third of Australia’s current fossil fuel emissions by 2050.
The National Hydrogen Strategy was adopted by all federal, state and territory governments in 2019. It sets the vision for a clean, innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry that helps our nation transition to a sustainable and affordable low emissions future.
Impact
A low emissions future for Australia
The Hydrogen Industry Mission will contribute to a low emissions future for Australia. We aim to:
- Promote major new domestic and export industries, creating urban and regional jobs and GPD growth
- Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in industrial processes
- Contribute to a diversified energy system with increased energy security and resilience.
Collaboration
Success depends on strong collaboration across industry, research and governments.
Year 1 - Establish a Hydrogen Knowledge Centre with industry, government and research community partners.
Year 3 - Showcase a hydrogen technology demonstration facility including a hydrogen refueller on a CSIRO site to demonstrate hydrogen production technologies.
Year 5 - Demonstration of a remote area power system by a CSIRO-led consortium to support regional energy transition. CSIRO hydrogen production technology deployed commercially.
