This document has been prepared in response to an audit of Indigenous plant knowledge in the Australian National Herbarium (ANH).
It provides recommendations for how the ANH can begin to better manage and care for IK in the collection. The report includes:
- a rationale for this work, referring to best practice guides for institutions working with and caring for IK
- the nature of IK in the ANH, including the methodology for tracking down the information, and the current management practices
- strategies for beginning to sort through and create a coherent system for managing IK in the ANH
- questions and challenges that arise in developing IK management and care guidelines, and future directions.
Cultural sensitivity
This document refers to Indigenous ecological and cultural knowledge that has been recorded on specimen labels that are part of the collections of the Australian National Herbarium (ANH). In recognition of CSIRO’s commitment to protection of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, the permissions status of the knowledge contained within the ANH is currently unknown. As such, explicit examples of use and preparation have been redacted in this report.
CSIRO acknowledges the historical research practices referenced throughout this document do not align to CSIRO’s current ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and is working to address this in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
