Key points
- The Teacher Researcher in Partnership Program (TRiPP) concluded in 2019. The program offered teachers hands-on experience in emerging and innovative science by undertaking a short research project alongside a CSIRO researcher.
Teacher Shane McMaster has a passion for science and loves to pass that onto his students. He finds it is easier for students to connect with the content when it has a real-life context. He joined TRiPP to update his lab experience in a way he could then share with his students.
The project: Digestibility of milk from different species
Shane was placed on a small research project “Digestibility of milk from different species” working with CSIRO’s Agriculture and Food team. The project involved the digestibility of milk with respect to release of peptides in the gastric and intestinal phase of digestion. His experience allowed him to see a functional research lab at work and extend his laboratory skills.
The impact
Having been some time since study and previous laboratory experience, Shane hoped to gain a peek into the work of a current-day scientist, to better answer students' common question: what exactly does a scientist do all day?
The experience renewed Shane's confidence in guiding students in laboratory techniques and skills. He took what he learned back to the classroom, with his students also conducting a week-long investigation into the digestibility of milk.
