About the placement

This internship is with Westox and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

You will work in the laboratory alongside another lab technician and will be supervised by the Production Manager at Westox. The Westox Managing Director, Barrie Cooper, has invented and produced products that are used globally in building restoration and manufacturing. Your role in the laboratory will be to test and analyse salt and mortar samples taken from client restoration sites, determining the mineral content, and completing reports based on your findings. You will also conduct daily product testing, ensuring that products produced in the factory are of the highest quality. This opportunity will allow you to gather insight into where this career pathway can take you and gain experience working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. Other Stem students who have completed work experience at Westox have gone on to work in large company laboratories.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: mid to late January 2026 (date to be confirmed)
  • Working arrangement: Part-time for 200 hours on a fixed-term contract
  • Remuneration: $25.00/hour + super on a temporary contract with Westox
  • Location: Campbelltown

Desired capabilities

  • Studying Chemistry or Materials Science
  • Experience with scientific report writing
  • Proficient with MS Suite
  • Laboratory experience, i.e., sample testing
  • A team player who can also work independently

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in the last few years of an undergraduate qualification.

About the industry partner

Westox is a building manufacturer. They help customers with salt and rising damp issues. They manufacture products that can be used in restoration, waterproofing, long-life coatings, salt removal, and many other services. The manager is the inventor of spray-on paving used on driveways with or without a pattern, the coating used to respray roof tiles, Westox Cocoon used in salt removal, and many more products. They export their products internationally and have experience with historical buildings.
