About the placement

This internship is with Komatsu and is facilitated by the CSIRO's Generation STEM Links program.

As an intern, you will work on a diverse range of tasks with the support of a team of experienced professionals. A key part of the role will allow you to gain practical experience using CAD tools to prepare detailed 2D and 3D layouts, develop and revise part and assembly models, and generate associated drawings and bills of material.

You'll be involved in peer reviews of design tasks, supporting quality assurance and continuous improvement. The role also includes providing technical specifications for customer orders, assisting with development requirements, and contributing to cost estimation processes.

Interns will collaborate across teams to conduct investigations, perform calculations and tests, and support design decisions and case resolutions. This role is perfect for a curious student who enjoys solving problems, thrives in collaborative environments, and is eager to learn by doing.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Mid November, 2025
  • Working arrangement: Full time hours Monday- Friday on a Casual contract from Mid- November until late January, 2026
  • Remuneration: $31.19/hour + Super
  • Location: Rutherford, NSW (on-site)

Desired capabilities

  • Some experience using CAD tools for design tasks is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, is highly regarded
  • Familiarity with MS Project would be an advantage
  • An interest in component design practices and developing technical proficiency
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills
  • Willingness to learn and apply engineering methods in practice

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification studying a Bachelor of Mechanical or Mechatronic engineering
