About the placement
This internship is with Komatsu and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.
In this internship you will work within the global underground mining Smart Solutions team who are responsible for developing cloud-based analytics, machine learning models, data visualisation and reporting solutions utilising customer equipment data. These automated analytics, dashboards, reports and alerts help mining customers make evidence backed operational decisions to optimise the health, production and safety of their underground equipment and personnel.
As a data scientist intern you will contribute to the development of analytics for underground soft rock machinery. You will get exposure to working with live datasets that are hosted in secure Cloud-based Mining Analytics platform and apply your knowledge to solving real-world problems through machine learning algorithms and reporting solutions. Focus will be on the design and implementation of analytic algorithms for large datasets generated by operating mining equipment. Key skills that you will further develop during your internship with us are;
- python programming for data processing and analysis
- applied machine learning with large data sets
- text mining
- applying statistical techniques
- visualizing insights with dashboarding and graphing tools
- using DevOps tools to track, deploy, test and document your progress
Work arrangements
- Start date: Late November, 2025
- Working arrangement: Full time hours Monday- Friday on a casual contract from Mid- November until late January, 2026
- Remuneration: $31.19/hour + Super
- Location: Rutherford, NSW (Hybrid)
Desired capabilities
- Pursuing undergraduate degrees in Mechanical/Mining/Mechatronic Engineering (with exposure to data science coursework and application in machine learning) or degrees in Data Science / Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence (with some exposure and interest in the mining/process industries).
- Proven strengths in data science and analytic development with large datasets.
- Capable Python programmer with exposure to popular data science libraries and visualization packages such as Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Plotly, and Matplotlib.
- Familiarity with time-series and relational databases and SQL scripting.
- Demonstrates an ability to work remotely using online tools to collaborate effectively with team members daily.
Requirements
- Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.
