About the placement
This internship is with Colterlec and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.
You will work alongside the Operational Systems Manager and wider IT & Operations Systems team to support and help drive transformation projects across the business — from uplifting existing operational digital systems (such as NetSuite, HubSpot, and Netstock) to helping implement new systems and AI-driven automations.
This is a genuine opportunity to build practical skills across the full spread of modern digital operations work: system configuration and light development, integrating platforms so data flows cleanly between them, building dashboards and reports that inform business decisions, and applying data science techniques to real operational data — all in service of projects that modernise how Colterlec runs.
Work arrangements
- Start date: September
- Working arrangement: Casual for 200 hours
- Remuneration: fixed term contract, $33.05 Casuals plus Super
- Location: on-site, Warabrook Office, Newcastle
Desired capabilities
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree in Information Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related discipline.
- Foundational programming skills (e.g. Python, SQL, or similar) gained through study or personal projects.
- A basic understanding of databases, data structures, and how business systems fit together.
- Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical ideas to non-technical colleagues.
- A willingness to learn, ask questions, and take ownership of tasks with guidance.
- Coursework or personal project exposure to BI tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau) or data visualisation libraries. (not essential)
- Some exposure to API integration, ETL processes, or cloud platforms. (not essential)
- Familiarity with, or interest in, machine learning or basic data science techniques. (not essential)
- An interest in or basic knowledge of AI and large language models (LLMs) and how they can be applied to automate business processes. (not essential)
Requirements
- Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.
