About the placement

This internship is with BT Imaging Pty Ltd and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

You will work within an interdisciplinary team and contribute to specific aspects of the design, build, deployment and/or productization of these new inspection platforms. You will be working closely with a specialist team of engineers, scientists and product managers at BT Imaging to deliver new advancements in research (e.g. developing new measurement techniques or evaluation of new designs and components), design (e.g. designing new electrical, mechanical or optical systems, or architecture of new software and industrial AI systems), prototyping (e.g. developing quality control rigs for new systems), automation (e.g. developing and deploying high-performance AI/ML models for industrial systems, automation systems control for high-speed robotics) and green energy solutions productization (e.g. manufacturing emissions footprint research, market research focused on product/requirements for renewable energy manufacturing).

This opportunity will allow you to gather insight into where a career in engineering can take you and gain experience working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

There are two positions being considered.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Beginning of May, 2026
  • Working arrangement: Full Time or Part time for 200 hours on a fixed term contract
  • Remuneration: $25/hour plus superannuation on a temporary contract with BT Imaging Pty Ltd
  • Location: in person internship - Unit 26, 198-222 Young Street Waterloo NSW 2017

Desired capabilities

  • Studying Engineering – renewable energy, mechanical, electrical/electronics, mechatronics, industrial/manufacturing, optical or Applied Physical Sciences or Computing
  • Previous experience with machine vision or imaging systems, solar photovoltaics, measurement systems, robotics, electro-mechanical systems, image based machine learning or software-hardware interfacing.
  • Strong understanding/keen interest in one (or more) of these streams:
    o PV instrumentation
    o Automation
    o Productization
  • Familiarity with CAD, Python, C/C++
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools and physical ability to lift up to 15 kgs occasionally (under supervision)
  • Hands on approach to problem solving and team player
  • Good written and oral communication skills

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.

About the industry partner

BT Imaging Pty Ltd is developing a world-first imaging-based contactless inspection system for the manufacturing of solar cells and panels. This is expected to revolutionize the solar industry and lead to significant cost savings for the solar industry as well as reduce the carbon footprint for manufacturing and deployment of solar energy. This new inspection platform combines breakthroughs in photoluminescence imaging techniques, advanced optical systems, high-speed industrial automation and leading-edge AI systems to deliver rapid quantitative insights into the quality, reliability and bankability of solar cells and solar panels. These insights drive key decisions across the solar energy value chain - from solar manufacturers to solar farm owners.
