About the placement

This internship is with Bower Labs and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

You will work alongside our engineers and assist with the design and development of an AI-native lab partner for research scientists. As an intern you will work with an experienced team, contributing to design, testing and documentation across;

Model landscape and selection - survey current vision-language and vision-language-action models
Experiment and evaluation design - help build a labelled evaluation set from consented laboratory footage, and a Python harness that runs candidate models over it and reports quality metrics
Context engineering - run structured experiments on how information is presented to the model: frame sampling rates, prompt and output schema design, how prior state and protocol documents are supplied

This opportunity will allow you to gather insight into where a career in software engineering AI can take you, and gain experience working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: October
  • Working arrangement: Full Time for 200 hours on a fixed term contract (Part-time considered)
  • Remuneration: $26.44 p/hr plus super full time, on a temporary contract with Bower Labs
  • Location: Virtual (Office based Lennox Head, NSW)

Desired capabilities

  • Studying computer science, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, information technology, or a science degree with a strong computing component or related qualification
  • Working knowledge of Python - able to write and debug scripts that process data, call an API, and produce summary statistics.
  • Coursework or personal projects in machine learning, computer vision or data science. Genuine curiosity about AI models
  • Familiarity with common data and ML libraries (pandas, numpy, PyTorch or similar) - used, not mastered.
  • Experience calling a large language model or vision model API, including in a hobby project.
  • Awareness of basic evaluation concepts such as baselines, held-out test sets and over-fitting, even at coursework level.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, methodical attention to detail

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.

About the Industry Partner

We build Bower - an AI-native lab partner for research scientists.

Bower helps researchers capture, structure and search their experimental work. It turns lab notes, protocols, meeting recordings, images and video into a structured, searchable scientific record, and provides an AI assistant that answers questions grounded in a lab's own data.

The company was incorporated in October 2025 and is an early-stage software business. Our platform is built on a modern web stack with smart glasses app and makes heavy use of large language models and computer vision.
