About the placement

This internship is with Lodge Environmental and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

Lodge Environmental is an established ecological consultancy based in Wollongong, NSW. The team offers hands-on experience in the ecological consulting industry, mentorship from seasoned professionals, a supportive and collaborative work environment, and the chance to contribute to meaningful projects aiming to create positive outcomes for biodiversity.

As an ecology intern at Lodge Environmental, you will work alongside the ecological and environmental consultants on the team to plan and support a range of projects within the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven, and beyond. Your role will involve coordinating, conducting and delivering field surveys and reporting findings, flora and fauna identification in the vegetation communities of NSW, GIS mapping, data inputs and analysis, report writing and communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a degree in Ecology or a related field and possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a willingness to participate in fieldwork (sometimes in challenging conditions), and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: October 6th, 2025.
  • Working arrangement: Part-time (3 days per week) on a fixed-term contract as agreed by student and Lodge Environmental. 200 hours total.
  • Remuneration: $ 25/h + super
  • Location: North Wollongong, NSW. There will also be opportunities to travel by carto sites across NSW during the internship.

Desired capabilities

  • Studying Conservation Biology, Ecology or Environmental Science
  • Proficiency and knowledge of QGIS software is essential
  • Previous experience using Avenza Maps GPS is advantageous
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Conservation Act and local council regulations https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/view/html/inforce/current/act-2016-063Familiarity with native flora and fauna of NSW
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work long days in field
  • Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.
  • Class C Drivers Licence

Services include flora & fauna; management plans, impact assessments, targeted survey, monitoring and fauna handling. We also help establish biodiversity stewardship agreements on private land.
