About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Porosity. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

Porosity is offering a hands-on internship to support the delivery of sensor-based AgTech solutions across Northern NSW, particularly in high-value agricultural sectors such as cotton and vineyards.

In this role you will work closely with the porosity team to assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing monitoring equipment that helps farmers make more informed decisions and use resources more efficiently. You will gain practical experience with cutting-edge sensor and telemetry technologies used to monitor on-farm conditions. You will also learn how to collect, interpret, and apply data to improve time management, travel efficiency, and input use (e.g. water, fertiliser, chemical sprays). These technologies are critical in helping farms operate more efficiently and sustainably- reducing emissions by cutting unnecessary fuel use, improving irrigation precision, and minimising input waste.

Key responsibilities

  • Install and configure on-farm sensors, including weather, water, soil moisture, and datalogger telemetry systems
  • Perform equipment maintenance, preventative servicing, and seasonal removal/storage
  • Follow operational procedures and complete records using job management software
  • Liaise with farmers and agronomists to clarify objectives and meet service expectations
  • Work safely and proactively identify risks in the field

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Flexible, as soon as possible
  • Working arrangement: 200 hours part time or full time depending on student availability. Potential for ongoing employment
  • Remuneration: $31.13 + Superannuation casual employment contract
  • Location: Dubbo
  • The internship will involve regular, supported travel with appropriate supervision- primarily day trips from Dubbo. Occasional overnight stays may be required for assignments in more remote areas (typically 2–3 hours away)
  • Vehicle and fuel provided for work travel.

Desired capabilities

  • Currently studying Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related STEM field
  • Familiarity/interest in AgTech products, including sensors, telemetry systems, or related software
  • A safe and responsible driver comfortable travelling between sites
  • Proactive, practical, and positive- committed to delivering smart, effective solutions with a "can-do" attitude
  • Strong computer skills
  • Attention to detail when it comes to cabling, wiring, and sensor setup
  • Practical on-farm experience or time spent living in a rural or regional setting (preferred but not essential)
  • Ability to follow established communication procedures to ensure safety during travel and fieldwork, including maintaining regular contact with supervisors (e.g. providing ETAs, confirming arrivals/departures, and updating on job progress)

Applicants must

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
  • Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
  • Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
  • Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
  • Have an unrestricted driver's licence
