About the placement
This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is hosted by NGNU and is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.
This is an Identified Internship for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who are passionate about sustainability, learning new skills, and contributing to outcomes that benefit both community and Country.

What you'll work on
You'll contribute to a major workplace transformation project with real community and environmental benefits. This project focuses on creating sustainable spaces while minimising environmental impact and embedding cultural values.
You'll be involved in activities such as:
- Diverting waste from landfill to protect Country
- Reducing embodied carbon and supporting greener building practices
- Applying circular economy principles through reuse and smart procurement
- Supporting workplace design that reflects culture, community, and environmental care
Key activities
As part of the team, you may:
- Support data collection and documentation
- Research materials, suppliers, and sustainability options
- Assist with coordination and operational tasks
- Contribute to sustainability benchmarking
How you'll be supported
- Mentoring: You'll be paired with industry experts and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander professionals who will guide you throughout your placement.
- Cultural Safety: NGNU is an Indigenous-owned business with over 35% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, ensuring a workplace that understands and respects culture.
- Professional Development: You'll have access to learning opportunities, networking, and guidance to support your career pathway beyond the internship.
- Wellbeing and Connection: You'll be part of a workplace that values balance, respect and strong connections with community.
Work arrangements
- Start date: We'll work with you to agree on a start date that fits your study schedule.
- Hours: Part-time placement totalling 200 hours. This usually works out to around 2 days per week over 10–12 weeks but can be adjusted to suit your university timetable.
- Flexibility: We understand study and community commitments come first. Hours and workdays can be adapted around exams, classes, or cultural obligations.
- Location: Mainly based at Macquarie Park, with some days at NGNU's office in Eveleigh. On-site project experience may also be offered.
- Remuneration: Part time, $25 per hour plus superannuation.
Desired capabilities
We're looking for someone who is:
- Studying Construction/Project Management, Interior Design, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- Passionate about sustainability and positive community impact.
- Open to developing skills in data collection and project documentation.
- Comfortable with stakeholder engagement and communication.
- Keen to learn, collaborate, and grow in a supportive environment.
Applicants must
- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- Be an Australian citizen currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract.
- Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher.
- Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude.
- Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to.
- Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience.

NGNU, abbreviated from Ngalawa Nura, means "Sitting in the Circle on Country" in the Dharug language.
We offer specialist project management, consulting, procurement, and development advisory services to the property, construction, and government sectors.
Founded by Brendan Thomas, a proud Dharug man, and Colin Townsend, a highly experienced project director, NGNU blends industry expertise with cultural values.
