About the placement
This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with BT Imaging Pty Ltd. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.
As an intern working at BT Imaging Pty Ltd, you will gain exposure to product development lifecycle, including design, prototyping, testing, documentation and productization for equipment and systems used in renewable energy manufacturing. You will be working closely with a specialist team of engineers, scientists and product managers at BT Imaging to deliver new advancements in research (e.g. developing new measurement techniques or evaluation of new designs and components), design (e.g. designing new electrical, mechanical or optical systems, or architecture of new software and industrial AI systems), prototyping (e.g. developing quality control rigs for new systems), automation (e.g. developing and deploying high-performance AI/ML models for industrial systems, automation systems control for high-speed robotics) and green energy solutions productization (e.g. manufacturing emissions footprint research, market research focused on product/requirements for renewable energy manufacturing).
You will also learn about engineering component selection, including evaluating performance, cost, supply chain and carbon footprint considerations.
Work arrangements
- Start date: Beginning of August 2026
- Working arrangement: Part-time/ Full time for 200 hours
- Remuneration: $26.44 per hour plus superannuation on a temporary contract with BT Imaging Pty Ltd
- Location: in person internship - Unit 26, 198-222 Young Street, Waterloo, NSW 2017, Australia
Desired capabilities
- Studying Engineering – renewable energy, mechanical, electrical/electronics, mechatronics, industrial/manufacturing, optical, Applied Physical Sciences, Computing, Data Science, or Machine learning
- Previous experience with machine vision or imaging systems, solar photovoltaics, measurement systems, robotics, electro-mechanical systems, image-based machine learning or software-hardware interfacing.
- Strong understanding of physical systems and a keen interest in hands-on problem solving in the renewable energy or Industry 4.0 domain
- Strong understanding/keen interest in one (or more) of these streams:
- PV instrumentation
- Automation
- Productization
- Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, OnShape), programming software (e.g. Visual Studio, BitBucket, Claude), programming skills (Python, C/C++, Rust, LabView), Optical Simulation (e.g. Zemax)
- Ability to manage tasks independently with guidance
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Good written and oral communication skills
Applicants must
- Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
- Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
- Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
- Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
