About the placement
This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Group Energy, a Borg Company. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.
As an intern working at Group Energy, you will support process engineering analysis and cost modelling to develop a bespoke marginal abatement cost curve model for decarbonisation planning and costing pathways. The role will involve researching, costing and structuring pragmatic decarbonisation options and translating these into a coherent modelling framework that supports technology pathway assessment toward net zero.
Key responsibilities:
- Research and structure decarbonisation technologies, abatement opportunities and cost inputs into a consistent modelling framework.
- Support the development of a marginal abatement cost curve by integrating engineering assumptions with commercial and financial considerations.
- Analyse process data, energy use and emissions sources to support scenario development and pathway modelling.
- Assist with documentation of assumptions, methodologies and outputs to ensure transparency and repeatability of the model.
Work arrangements
- Start date: May 2026
- Working arrangement: Part-time (no less than 2 days a week) for 200 hours on a fixed term contract
- Remuneration: $25.00 per hour plus superannuation
- Location: 2 Wella Way Somersby NSW. This role suits attendance in person. Note public transport is limited.
Desired capabilities
- Currently pursuing a dual Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Commerce or Finance. Consideration will also be given to students in Mechanical, Process or Environmental Engineering, or relevant business‑related fields.
- Interest in process engineering, energy systems and decarbonisation pathways.
- Exposure to data analysis or visualisation tools (such as Power BI) is favourable.
- Strong analytical thinking with an ability to link technical concepts to commercial outcomes.
- Willingness to learn, contribute ideas and take ownership of defined workstreams within a collaborative team environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Applicants must:
- Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
- Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
- Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
- Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
