About

This self-paced eLearning module introduces a dual approach to STEM teaching that blends inquiry learning and explicit teaching. Designed for pre-service and current K–12 educators, the module offers a high-level introduction to each approach and explores how combining them can enrich classroom practice. Inquiry learning encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and student ownership through open-ended investigations. Explicit teaching, on the other hand, provides structured, teacher-led instruction to build foundational knowledge and confidence. The module also introduces the Australian Academy of Science’s LIA (Launch, Inquire, Act) Framework—a powerful tool to guide educators in applying both approaches with purpose and flexibility. By understanding when and how to use each method, teachers can create meaningful, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences that prepare students for real-world scientific challenges.

This eLearning module is for educators and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
