About the placement
This internship is with Wagga Wagga City Council and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.
The North Wagga floodplain has been a key focus for Wagga City Council, with extensive testing and flood studies aimed at improving flood resilience. The North Wagga Flood Mitigation studies and Vegetation Management Plan was written in accordance with NSW biodiversity legislation, however implementation guides and instruments were not available at the time of writing.
You will work closely with Council’s Natural Resource Management Officer to review Council’s current Vegetation Management Plan for North Wagga to develop an action plan for managing vegetation within Wilks Park, North Wagga. This will involve researching removal methods including cool burns, selective thinning and forest mulching. Researching approval processes for each of these methods, all whilst ensuring both flood mitigation and biodiversity outcomes are achieved.
This is a real-life issue that impacts the community, and the solution being developed aims to address a significant environmental and social challenge.
Work arrangements
- Start date: Summer placement, Nov-Dec 2026
- Working arrangement: Full-time of a fixed-term contract as agreed by student and Wagga Wagga City Council
- Remuneration: $26.44/h + super
- Location: Wagga Wagga, NSW – On site – Accommodation is self-supported
Desired capabilities
- Studying Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related qualification
- Interest in vegetation and flood management
- Current Drivers Licence
- Interpreting legislation would be advantageous
- Research capabilities
- Project planning capabilities
- Ability to comprehend and translate complex problems and projects to a range of stakeholders
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
Requirements
- Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.
