About the placement

This internship is with Australian Food and Pharmaceutical Industries (AFPI) and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

You will work within an interdisciplinary team and support the development and implementation of regulatory and operational systems within a functional food manufacturing environment. A key focus of the project will be assisting in the preparation, review, and standardisation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across production and quality processes, ensuring alignment with relevant regulatory frameworks, including export requirements.

The role will involve research and documentation of regulatory requirements, drafting SOPs, and supporting their practical implementation within the facility. To ensure a comprehensive understanding, you will also participate in day-to-day production activities. This hands-on involvement will provide critical insight into manufacturing workflows, enabling the development of SOPs that are both compliant and operationally effective.

Additional tasks may include assisting with process mapping, identifying areas for improvement, and supporting internal compliance documentation. The project is designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, providing you with exposure to real-world regulatory, quality, and manufacturing environments.

This opportunity will allow you to gather insight into where a career in regulatory policy can take you, and gain experience working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

  • Strong analytical and research skills, particularly in reviewing regulatory requirements and translating them into practical documentation
  • Good written communication skills, as the role involves drafting and refining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other compliance documents
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow structured processes are essential, especially within a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to engage in both office-based and hands-on activities is important, as the role includes participation in production to better understand manufacturing workflows and support the practical implementation of SOPs
