About the placement

This internship is with Stormtech and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

You will work within the engineering department and assist in optimising the existing quality management system (QMS) to provide structure, consistency and better tools. Assist across quality, engineering and manufacturing on four connected areas: the QMS itself, the IT system that records NCRs, CAPAs and controlled documents, product drawings and design automation, and commissioning a CNC 3kW fibre laser.

This opportunity will allow you to gather insight into where a career in engineering can take you, and gain experience working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

  1. Quality management system
    • Review how the current system (Momentum) captures non-conformance reports (NCRs), corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) and controlled documents
    • Document user requirements and pain points with various areas
    • Recommend improvements: optimising the existing system, or scoping an upgrade with options, costs and risks
    • Implement agreed changes, including workflows, approvals, numbering, revision control and reporting dashboards
    • Run root-cause analysis on selected NCRs (5 Whys, fishbone) and track CAPAs to close-out
    • Assist operations with new production schedule ongoing development including QMS data integration
  2. Engineering systems
    • Create and update 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks
    • Develop, maintain and improve SolidWorks and DriveWorks design automation
  3. Production equipment
    • Assist with installation and commissioning of new equipment
    • Help write safe work procedures, risk assessments and operator work instructions
    • Assist in optimising programming and nesting in CAD/CAM software
    • Build a library of standard parts and cutting parameters, and link it to SolidWorks/DriveWorks outputs

Work arrangements

  • Start date: November (note Stormtech closed 24 Dec – 18 Jan)
  • Working arrangement: Part time/Full time for 200 hours on a fixed term contract with the possibility of ongoing work for the right candidate
  • Remuneration: $33.05 Casuals plus Super on a temporary contract with Stormtech
  • Location: on-site, South Nowra, NSW

Desired capabilities

  • Enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Mechatronics Engineering
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings)
  • Understanding of engineering drawing standards (AS 1100) and tolerancing
  • Strong written communication for procedures and reports
  • Organised, detail-focused and comfortable working with production staff
  • Exposure to design automation
  • Coursework or project work in quality management, ISO 9001 or lean manufacturing

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your final year of an undergraduate qualification.
