Workshops
Various interactive workshops will be delivered throughout the day by industry professionals. Spaces are limited and it is first in, best dressed so please arrive at the Banksia room in plenty of time to secure your spot.
Recycling Wastewater with Sydney Water
Time: 10.30am-11am
In this workshop, you will learn about the processes involved in managing wastewater. You will also learn about the kinds of things that are in wastewater, how it is cleaned and what can be done to help play a role in sustainable water management. As part of this workshop, participants will observe what happens when different substances are put down our pipes and drains. They will also hear from an expert in the field of cogeneration and learn how Sydney Water is making renewable energy from waste. All participants will go home with resources to conduct you own wastewater audit.
Robotic Welding with Virtual Reality in Manufactoring with Lincoln Electric
Time: 11.30am-12pm
In this workshop you will learn about Advanced Manufacturing and why it is such an important part of the Western Sydney economy. Lincoln Electric will be bringing their robotic welding to life; and you will have the opportunity to learn about modern welding practises such as welding via robots and learning through virtual reality. You will also learn about the vast opportunities a career in welding can bring.
Technologies in Health Sciences with TAFE NSW
Time: 12.30pm-1pm
Industry experts, Rhonda Mulligan, Head Teacher General Health and David Bellamy, TAFE NSW Nepean, Teacher and Sterilisation Specialist from St George Hospital will provide you with an overview of the use of technology and robotics in surgeries and the vital they play in patient care and achieving optimum results post-surgical interventions. You will have an opportunity to brainstorm ideas in developing a process that will enable infection control through an interactive session using 'glitter bug'.
Design and Fabrication with Metallum Fabrication
Time: 1.30pm-2pm
In this workshop you will be introduced to a sample project to discover how parts are drawn up, converted into a useable file, and then manufactured. You will then have the opportunity to produce the item the same way the Metallum team does for real clients. You will also find out the career opportunities in Advanced Manufactoring.
Panellists
Career paths are never linear, even if they look like it from the outside. At this panel discussion, you will hear from STEM Professionals about how they ended up in the role they did, the key learnings they took along the way and their top tips for being successful in STEM.
Kirsty O’Sullivan, CSIRO, Generation STEM Team Leader
Kirsty O'Sullivan has spent over a decade working in the Education sector, both in the UK and Australia. With a background in Science teaching, Kirsty is passionate and committed to STEM education and building up the next generation of STEM professionals. She is experienced in planning, delivering, and managing programs that provide STEM career pathways for students, particularly those in underrepresented groups.
Kirsty is currently Team Leader, Generation STEM at CSIRO. Generation STEM is a 10 year initiative to attract, support, train and retain NSW students in STEM and school, into further education and into employment. Kirsty is leading the team to build the STEM pipeline in Western Sydney and wider NSW through this initiative.
Bianca Shepherd - Engineering Support Workshop Manager, ANSTO Headshot
Bianca Shepherd is ANSTO’s Engineering Support Workshop Manager, confidently overseeing the manufacture and fabrication of equipment and specialised parts for critical Australian scientific and landmark infrastructure.
In particular, Bianca oversees the manufacture of specialised parts for the OPAL multi-purpose reactor, which is required for the production of nuclear medicine that benefits half a million Australians each year. Bianca also enables the continued operation of infrastructure relevant to important health, environment and nuclear fuel cycle research.
Bianca began her career almost thirty years ago as an Electrical Engineering Cadet at BHP. During that time, she completed an Associate Diploma in Electrical Engineering whilst undertaking an electrical trade, and working in the steel industry.
Bianca remains grateful for her trade expertise, and developing the next generation of young trade professionals in STEM has become her passion. She possesses strong education and training skills, and has worked at the University of Ballarat to teach electrical modules to apprentices and tradespeople.
Stela Solar – Director, National Artifical Intelligence Centre
Stela Solar is passionate about removing barriers to positive technology adoption and engagement. Over the past 15 years, Stela has cultivated expertise in capturing new revenue opportunities presented by emerging technologies, particularly through business model transformation. With most recent experience as Global Director of AI Solutions Sales and Strategy at Microsoft, Stela's experiences across business development, strategy, ecosystem development, marketing and product management inform her insights surrounding cross-organisational factors affecting an organisation’s ability to capture an advantage.
Stela is returning to Australia after seven years in the US to lead the National AI Centre.
Jack Kennedy, Apprentice, Nepean Engineering and Innovation
Jack is a 16-year-old apprentice who commenced his apprenticeship in January 2022 at NEPEAN Engineering & Innovation. Jack left school at the end of year 10 as he was seeking a practical working experience to coincide with his studies at TAFE and fell in love with engineering and his apprenticeship. Jack commenced his apprenticeship as a Fabricator/Boilermaker, however, had the opportunity to transfer to Fitting & Machining after he felt it was a better fit for his skills and interests. Outside of work Jack enjoys riding his motorbike (safely), boxing and 4-wheel driving. Jack is excited to be on the panel and impart some of his knowledge at the Careers Expo.
Anastasia Vickers, Bachelor of Advanced Science student
My name is Anastasia Vickers. I am a proud Ngadjuri Woman, First Nations Leader and at a young age of 20, take on the full-time parenting role to my 13 year-old brother. I'm a Wagana Dancer, Artist, CareerTrackers intern and work at GoodmanFielder during University holidays. For most of my life, I have lived in the Blue Mountains and grew up with my Grandparents.
I'm a strong believer in being successful by studying your true passion and being determined to overcome any obstacles you may face. I've been able to have a great deal of experience in the Food Science industry throughout my two years at Western Sydney University studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Nutrition and Food Science). This involves the research, formulation and production of products you would typically see on the shelves of supermarkets.
