Impact framework
Monitoring and evaluation activities are guided by an impact framework, comprising of an overall Project Impact Statement and Pathway, and Impact Statements and Pathways for each supporting program.
Outcomes
Some of the key Project outcomes that monitoring and evaluation activities are measuring include:
- increased student engagement, attendance, results and recognition
- increased student aspiration, sense of value, cultural identity and school belonging
- increased parental, family and community engagement and recognition of role models
- increased teacher capacity in: inquiry; place-based, hands on curriculum development; and delivery in an Indigenous context or led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the classroom.
Evaluation strategies
The monitoring and research strategies being employed to assess progress against the outcomes include:
- collection of regular monitoring information on achievement, engagement, attendance, attitudes and other indicators through surveys, teacher assessments, and administrative data
- collection of jurisdictional data on student achievement and attendance, such as NAPLAN results and student grades
- in-depth case studies of individual programs, comprising focus groups and interviews with students, parents, teachers, program staff, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders
- review of contemporary research evidence on what works in Indigenous STEM education.
Reporting
Annual Monitoring and Evaluation Reports describe progress towards the outcomes and impacts in the Impact Pathways.
The First Monitoring and Evaluation Report examines the implementation of the Indigenous STEM Education Project.
The Second Monitoring and Evaluation Report provides positive evidence that the goal of increased engagement and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is being met across the Indigenous STEM Education Project.
The Third Monitoring and Evaluation Report outlines the degree to which each program has achieved intended outcomes and reviews progress towards outcomes for the Indigenous STEM Education project as a whole.
The Final Evaluation Report demonstrates that the Indigenous STEM Education Project has left a lasting impact on participating educators, students and schools, and that the integration of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledges and contexts through hands-on, inquiry-based lessons is beneficial for all students, regardless of their cultural backgrounds.
Case study reports provide an in-depth assessment of the degree to which programs are meeting their intended outcomes, as described in Impact Pathways. The case study reports take a strengths-based approach, focusing on what is working well and how to replicate and sustain positive outcomes.
