About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Essential Powerline Design. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

As an intern at Essential Powerline Design, you’ll gain hands-on experience in Level 3 electrical design- the critical planning and documentation work that connects developments and infrastructure to the electricity grid. This includes designing substations, underground cabling, and street lighting systems that form the local distribution network- the vital final link in delivering electricity from high-voltage transmission lines to homes, businesses, and communities.

This internship offers more than technical experience- it gives you the opportunity to contribute directly to Australia’s energy transition. Many of the projects you’ll work on support the shift toward net zero emissions and a decarbonised grid, including:

EV charging infrastructure – designing electrical connections for the rollout of electric vehicle chargers

  • Renewable energy projects – developing grid access solutions for solar, wind, and battery storage installations
  • Residential and commercial subdivisions – planning sustainable energy layouts for growing communities
  • Major transmission initiatives – such as Humelink, strengthening the grid to support large-scale clean energy integration

You’ll be embedded in a collaborative, highly experienced team and exposed to real-world engineering challenges, while building both your technical expertise and professional capability in one of the most critical areas of the energy sector.
