About the placement

This internship is offered through the NSW Skills for Net Zero initiative, proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO. The opportunity is hosted by Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) (SCC), a leading provider of aged care and retirement living services.

As an intern at SCC, you will play an important role in a multi-site rooftop solar installation project designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy costs, and help advance SCC’s long-term sustainability goals. The project includes the deployment of solar PV systems across selected aged care and retirement living facilities, with potential future integration of battery storage solutions.

This initiative is a key part of SCC’s environmental strategy under the Living Care: Action Plan for People and Planet 2024–2027 and supports compliance with the New Aged Care Act’s expectations for sustainable and accountable operations. It also aligns with SCC’s broader Net Zero Planning Grant activities.

Throughout your internship, you will be supported to engage in a variety of meaningful focus areas, including:

  • Practical Decarbonisation Planning: Collaborate on planning and implementing solar PV systems across multiple sites, gaining insight into system design, operational considerations, and emissions reduction strategies.
  • Energy and Emissions Data Analysis: Analyse energy consumption data, calculate carbon savings, and support monitoring and reporting of project outcomes.
  • Sustainability Strategy Implementation: Explore how renewable energy initiatives align with ESG frameworks and respond to regulatory reforms and organisational sustainability goals.
  • Project Scoping and Feasibility Assessment: Assist with site assessments, identify risks and opportunities, and contribute to decision-making tools.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Prepare briefing materials and visual reports, translating technical information into clear, accessible insights.
  • Addressing Sector-Specific Sustainability Challenges: Contribute to solutions for aged care sustainability, focusing on safety, reliability, and operational continuity.
  • Exposure to Practical WHS Systems: Gain hands-on experience with workplace health and safety systems and their application in sustainability projects.
  • Contractor Management Experience: Support contractor coordination, compliance, and performance monitoring across multiple sites.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Late October/ November 2025
  • Working arrangement: Part-time for 200 hours
  • Remuneration: $25 per hour plus superannuation
  • Location: Epping

Desired capabilities

  • Background in engineering, environmental science, or data science with interest in sustainability
  • Analytical skills for interpreting site data, energy use, and emissions profiles
  • Basic technical knowledge of solar PV systems, renewable energy generation and carbon reduction principles.
  • Proficiency in data handling, spreadsheets, and emissions modelling tools
  • Problem-solving ability to identify and address site-level challenges
  • Strong communication skills for preparing summaries and visuals for diverse audiences
  • Awareness of sustainability issues in aged care (preferred)

Applicants must:

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
  • Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
  • Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
  • Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
