About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Hiringa Energy. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

At Hiringa, we’re revolutionising the way energy-based industries interact with the electricity grid by creating systems that work to encourage adopting more sources of renewable energy.

As an intern, you’ll support one or both of Hiringa’s pioneering Australian projects:

  • Hydrogen Refuelling Network: Contribute to front-end engineering to develop hydrogen refuelling stations for a low-carbon freight corridor between Sydney and Brisbane, with sites including on-site electrolysis, compression, and dispensing capabilities.
  • P2X Ammonia Plant: Assist in feasibility studies for Hiringa’s next low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen plant, supporting sustainable agriculture and energy integration.

You’ll work alongside our Projects and Commercial teams to progress these initiatives, gaining exposure to engineering, commercial strategy, and project development.

What We’ll Offer

  • A potential site visit to Moree, where construction of the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia (GEGHA) Project has commenced (subject to schedule availability).
  • Mentorship and exposure to cross-functional teams across engineering, commercial, and project management.
  • Access to software, design tools, and resources for technical evaluation and modelling.

What You’ll Do

Support Hiringa’s Australian developments in hydrogen refuelling and green ammonia production.

Activities may include:

  • Reviewing station designs and equipment specifications
  • Developing process flow diagrams and site layouts
  • Performing energy balance and feasibility assessments
  • Evaluating vendor systems and site constraints
  • Supporting integration with renewable energy assets

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Late November (flexible)
  • Working arrangement: Part-time (30+ hours)/ Full time for 200 hours, with a break over the Christmas period until early Jan
  • Remuneration: $25 per hour + superannuation
  • Location: You will sit with our Australian team, located at Greenhouse, Level 3, 180 George Street, Sydney 2000.

Desired capabilities

  • Final or penultimate year Engineering student (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Renewable or similar) with an interest in sustainability
  • Strong health & safety awareness
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude
  • Ethical, trustworthy, and respectful of confidentiality
  • Proactive problem-solver with stakeholder focus
  • Adaptable to change and ambiguity
  • Builds professional networks and stakeholder relationships

  • Good written & oral communication skills including the ability to present confidently.

Applicants must:

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in NSW and able to enter an employment contract
  • Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
  • Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
  • Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
