About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Alt-Tech. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

Alt-Tech, an innovative Australian family business, invites you to join our team as an intern, where your ideas and skills will help shape sustainable solutions in off-grid applications.

At Alt-Tech, we're passionate about the circular economy. We repurpose used renewable energy products to create custom, off-grid systems for farms, caravans, off-grid homes, and agricultural applications like solar-powered water pumps. Our mission is to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions while reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable future.

Your role

You'll work closely with customers to understand their desire for reliable, off-grid solutions. You'll help design, build, and deliver tailored technical solutions that make sustainable, independent energy possible. You'll receive hands-on training and mentoring from experienced team members, ensuring you feel supported as you develop your skills. You will have the chance to:

  • Liaise directly with customers to scope and deliver bespoke renewable energy systems
  • Apply your technical knowledge to repurpose components (e.g., used batteries, solar panels, controllers)
  • Troubleshoot and optimise systems to ensure reliability and efficiency
  • Contribute to exciting projects, such as modernising water control infrastructure at Charles Sturt University with solar-powered water pumping using second-life components

Work arrangements

  • Start date: Summer university break (flexible, including a break for Christmas)
  • Working arrangement: Full time for 200 hours
  • Remuneration: $25 per hour plus superannuation
  • Location: Wagga Wagga
  • This role may involve periods of standing and lifting equipment. If you have accessibility requirements, we encourage you to let us know so we can discuss reasonable adjustments

Desired capabilities

We welcome students from mechatronics, mechanical, electrical, and programming backgrounds. Some of the skills and interests that would help you thrive in this role include:

  • Hands-on experience with electrical circuits, solar PV systems, or battery management
  • Mechanical design, CAD, or fabrication skills
  • Programming or automation (e.g., Python and numerous others)
  • Data analysis and troubleshooting
  • Strong communication skills to engage with customers and translate their needs into practical solutions
  • A creative, problem-solving mindset
  • Passion for sustainability and renewable energy
  • Must be physically fit enough to be on your feet all day and able to safely lift heavy/bulky items.

Applicants must

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
  • Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
  • Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
  • Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience
