About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Earthbuilder Technology Pty Ltd. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

As an intern working at Earthbuilder Technology Pty Ltd, you will contribute to the development of Earthbuilt’s first prototype homes using the world’s first zero-carbon, on-site home manufacturing system. The system focuses on a 3D printer that deposits layers of compressed earth and fibre.

A critical part of this work is the creation of a complete Building Information Modelling (BIM) model of the prototype homes before manufacture begins. The model is expected to be developed principally in Rhino, potentially using Grasshopper for parametric and computational workflows. As the 3D printer deposits in layers, and the model will need to supply machine-readable plans for each layer: a use-case that matches well with Rhino capabilities. You will contribute to the architectural design and BIM modelling of all parts, including the structural system and components, helping develop the kind of integrated digital design and manufacturing workflow that Earthbuilt believes will shape the future of architecture.

Working closely with Earthbuilt’s registered architect, engineering team and potentially NSW building product suppliers, you will help establish the digital workflow for Earthbuilt’s first full-scale prototypes, exploring how BIM, computational design and advanced manufacturing can come together to reduce the carbon impact of construction and support the delivery of low-carbon housing.

This goes beyond conventional architectural documentation. You will help establish the digital workflow for Earthbuilt’s first full-scale prototypes, exploring how BIM, computational design and advanced manufacturing can come together to deliver low-carbon housing.

For interns considering future registration as an architect in NSW, Earthbuilt is happy to sign off hours against the NSW Architects’ accreditation criteria.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: 29 November 2026
  • Working arrangement: Part-time for 200 hours – 4 days a week in December, break from 25 Dec until 18 January when intern can work 2 days a week to fit with university commitments
  • Remuneration: part time $26:44 per hour plus superannuation
  • Location: in-person; 789 Botany Road, Rosebery NSW 2018

Desired capabilities

  • Studying architecture
  • Strong proficiency in Rhino
  • Experience with Grasshopper with a strong interest in developing parametric and computational design skills
  • An understanding of BIM and 3D architectural modelling – coordination of building components and information within a single digital model
  • Communicates and collaborates well with architects, engineers, manufacturers and product suppliers
  • An interest in digital fabrication, advanced manufacturing, robotics or design for manufacture and assembly
  • Experience with or interest in prototyping advantageous.
  • Enthusiasm for zero-carbon construction and solving some of the larger problems facing the world – overinflated housing costs, runaway carbon emissions, and productivity crashing. Earthbuilt has the potential to make a real difference.
  • For the right candidate this opportunity may continue with ongoing paid work or research scholarships. Our current Founding Engineer started as a paid intern.

Applicants must:

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current distinction-average or higher
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident currently residing in New South Wales and able to enter an employment contract
  • Meet general selection criteria at the application stage, including communication skills, aptitude, and attitude
  • Not be an existing employee or intern (paid or unpaid) of the host organisation they are applying to
  • Be willing to provide feedback on their placement experience

About the host workplace

Earthbuilt is developing a potential world-first: a 3D printer that turns the building site into both a home factory and the quarry for its principal structural material: earth. The resulting efficiencies could be world-changing. And for the better.

But to build efficiently, Earthbuilt will need every home to be virtually pre-manufactured as a detailed BIM model. This creates more work for architects upfront, but it could create enormous efficiencies on the building site. Imagine not having to wait for the principal structural material to arrive or having to buy it from a supplier.

Earthbuilt is a rural Australian start-up with a strong social and environmental mission. They describe that mission simply: “Here To Do Good.”
