The Young Indigenous Women's STEM Academy is delivered by CSIRO in partnership with Indigenous employment organisation CareerTrackers, working to ensure STEM pathways are tailored to personal goals and supporting social and emotional wellbeing.

The Academy is proudly funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency.

CSIRO is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world.

With more than 40 years’ experience in delivering innovative education initiatives designed to boost Australia’s science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) literacy, CSIRO has focus on building teacher capacity and promoting STEM career pathways by delivering relevant and real-life STEM learning resources and experiences in and out of the classroom.


CareerTrackers is a national non-profit social enterprise with the goal of creating pathways and support systems for Indigenous students to graduate from university with high marks, industry experience and a bright professional future.

CareerTrackers provides world-class training and support to students throughout their academic career. Students are connected to the largest network of emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professionals in Australia.

National Indigenous Australians Agency

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is committed to improving the lives of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The NIAA supports the Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, and works to influence policy across the entire Australian Government. NIAA liaises closely with State and Territory governments, peak bodies and service providers to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs and services are delivering for Indigenous Australians.

Our impact

Since its inception in 2019, the Academy has rapidly increased the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young women undertaking studies and careers in STEM.

To date, we’ve supported over 600+ students nation-wide, with thanks to an initial $20million fund from the National Indigenous Australians Agency.

We’re proud of our impact on the lives of the young women and their communities

  • Hold a 96% participation retention rate from Year 8 to Year 12, compared to 63% national average for Indigenous female students attending school/study.
  • Over 600 total participants.
  • Delivered over 95 individual STEM experiences.
  • Led by over 97% Indigenous women staff members, including those in leadership roles.
  • Created space for Indigenous young women and staff to present and speak at prominent conferences and events.
  • Winners 2023 The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Impact Excellence Medal.
  • Winners of People’s Choice Award 2023 Northern Territory Science Week Awards 2023.
