The Australian Government has launched the Industry Data Classification Framework, which aims to assist Australian organisations to classify and define the value of their data in a consistent and unified way. CSIRO worked with the Department of Home Affairs and with industry organisations across Australia to develop the framework. The Australian Government has released the Industry Data Classification Framework (IDCF) to help Australian organisations understand the value of their data, better manage data risks and improve cyber security outcomes.
The IDCF is a voluntary framework that provides a consistent way for organisations to classify, protect and share data. It aligns with existing standards and is designed to work for organisations of all sizes – from small-medium enterprises to large organisations.
The framework is a practical tool that can help organisations:
- understand the value of their data
- identify and manage data risks
- apply appropriate protections
- share data securely and with greater confidence.
The IDCF has been developed in partnership with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, as a key deliverable of the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy (the Strategy).
The IDCF draws on extensive research and consultation with industry across Australia. It is designed to be flexible and easy to adopt, whether an organisation is just starting its data security journey or has mature data handling practices in place.
Under Horizon 2 of the Strategy, the Department of Home Affairs will work closely with industry to support adoption of the IDCF and ensure it continues to meet the needs of Australian organisations in the ever-changing cyber threat landscape.
