The challenge
No net loss of biodiversity
The loss of biodiversity is increasingly seen a material risk to global economic systems. While many organisations seek to have as a minimum an objective to achieve no net loss of biodiversity, there is rising ambition globally to achieve positive biodiversity outcomes.
The measurement of biodiversity is often perceived to be complex and multifaceted. However, if companies are to adopt broad-scale monitoring and reporting of biodiversity performance, they can achieve this with robust, scalable and repeatable metrics.
Our response
Assessing biodiversity performance efficiently and at scale
The project focused on four key actions:
- Framework: A robust, scalable approach for assessing biodiversity across space and time.
- Indicators: Testing habitat-based metrics such as habitat condition, threatened species condition, and species extinction risk.
- Options: A portfolio of actions to close the biodiversity gap, building on the mitigation hierarchy.
- Accounting: Natural capital accounting methods to support transparent reporting and governance.
The approach developed here aims to be adaptable to the inclusion of other data sources including eDNA and complement local data collection of data such as soil health, water quality and vegetation condition
The results
Practical tools for organisations
- First-of-its-kind biodiversity assessment.
- Spatial workflow and recovery action database to guide restoration and mitigation.
- Blueprint for biodiversity accounting, enabling integration into corporate reporting and decision-making.
