CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) in Geelong, Victoria has been operating since 1985.
The high-containment facility plays a critical role in protecting Australians against infectious animal and zoonotic diseases and it is a key provider of emergency animal disease testing for the government, such as H5 avian influenza.
Opened in 1985, the facility now needs to be refurbished. The ACDP Part-Life Refit project will ensure ACDP can continue to carry out its vital work for the next 30+ years.
What is being done?
The project will be carried out in two stages, to ensure the facility can continue to operate throughout.
Stage 1 will see the construction of a new laboratory wing on the existing site.
Initial work on Stage 1 is now underway and expected to be completed by 2029.
Once Stage 1 is complete, ACDP operations will move into the new laboratory wing so Stage 2 can begin.
The project will enable CSIRO to continue to be at the forefront in supporting Australia and the world to prevent, prepare for and respond to emerging infectious diseases.
What impacts are expected?
- All construction works will occur within ACDP’s existing secure boundaries on weekdays from 7am to 5pm.
- Construction activities may generate some noise, but no vibration impacts are expected. ACDP is a large site set back from the main road and neighbouring properties, which helps to minimise noise beyond the site boundary.
- Construction vehicles will access the site via ACDP’s main entry off Portarlington Road. The creation of a temporary carpark will reduce the impact of vehicle’s entering and exiting the site.
- Any vegetation removal will be strictly limited to the areas required for the new building extension. This will be managed in accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
- All construction activities will be carefully planned to maintain ACDP’s secure level of biocontainment and ongoing operations. This will be managed in accordance with all relevant regulations.
