What is the MNF?

The Marine National Facility (MNF) is national collaborative research infrastructure operated by CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, to enable marine research for national benefit. The MNF includes the ocean-class research vessel (RV) Investigator, which is owned by CSIRO.

Access to sea time on RV Investigator is available to Australian researchers and their international collaborators through a competitive application process. The vessel offers a highly flexible research platform with wide scientific capabilities, and voyages generally involve multiple projects, multiple partners and multidisciplinary science.

MNF naming conventions

Please use the official name of the facility and vessel for their first mention in text:

  • 'CSIRO Marine National Facility (MNF)', with 'MNF' being fine to use following that
  • 'CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator', with 'RV Investigator' being fine to use following that.

These conventions are requested to meet accessibility requirements, provide appropriate acknowledgements and support clarity in writing.

Acknowledging the MNF

Users of MNF data, samples and infrastructure are required to clearly acknowledge the MNF in recognition of these research services.

The following acknowledgement should be included in media and communication products produced by voyage partners, collaborators and participants:

  • This research is/was supported by a grant of sea time on RV Investigator from the CSIRO Marine National Facility.
