Health, safety and environment

At CSIRO, we are committed to continuously enhancing our health, safety and environmental standards to reduce the risk of:

  • injuries to staff, visitors and contractors
  • environmental harm

Our team of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) professionals are always available to provide advice and guidance to staff, helping to ensure a safe working environment for everyone.

All new staff members participate in a safety induction program, equipping them with the necessary tools, skills and information to carry out their duties in a safe manner.

Fit for purpose and early intervention

At CSIRO, we prioritise the health and safety of our people. Our lab and office facilities at CSIRO are designed to be fit for purpose and functionally appropriate, ensuring that our employees have a safe, efficient, and supportive environment to thrive in their work.

CSIRO also has an early intervention program which helps staff and affiliates access early medical treatment or advice promptly after reporting a work-related illness or injury.

By addressing injuries or illnesses early, we aim to facilitate timely recovery and prevent issues from becoming more serious or chronic.

Employee assistance program (EAP)

CSIRO employees and their immediate family members are able to access free, voluntary and confidential counselling services. The EAP is available 24/7, 365 days a year and provides employees with multiple no-cost sessions with a qualified professional. Short term assistance is offered for a range of work-related and personal concerns that may be impacting overall wellbeing.

First aid

Our employees have access to emergency and routine first aid services at all CSIRO sites across Australia. Comprehensive first aid training is provided to staff members who have volunteered to act as official first aid officers.

Equity and diversity contact officers

Equity contact officers, also known as diversity and inclusion officers, are located at all major CSIRO sites and serve as a valuable resource for all staff. These voluntary positions are a point of contact for staff witnessing or experiencing disrespectful, bullying, or discriminatory behaviour.

Our diversity and inclusion officers are here to listen, provide information, and offer options to help resolve issues, ensuring a respectful and inclusive workplace for everyone.

Domestic family violence and abuse (DFVA) contact officers

CSIRO has trained DFVA contact officers available to support staff affected by domestic and family violence. They provide information on the support options available both within CSIRO and externally, ensuring that affected employees receive the help they need.

Mental health champions

At CSIRO, our mental health champions are dedicated to supporting staff by raising awareness and fostering an open culture around mental health. These volunteers aim to make mental health a normal part of workplace conversation, ensuring employees feel confident and safe seeking support. Our empathetic and caring champions are trained to guide colleagues to the help available, promoting a mentally healthy workplace for everyone.

Health promotion

Some of our sites offer a variety of health promotion initiatives designed to keep our employees active and engaged. Depending on the site, these initiatives could include fitness and yoga classes, walking groups, informative courses and seminars. Additionally, our on-site facilities can include showers, changing rooms, sporting fields and gymnasiums to help support a healthy lifestyle. CSIRO supports employees to make a regular commitment to a healthy lifestyle and encourages employees to participate in health promotion initiatives.

CSIRO Benevolent Fund

At CSIRO, we have four active benevolent fund management committees, ensuring that all staff across Australia have access to a fund representative. For over 30 years, the fund has existed to assist current and former staff members, as well as their dependents, during times of need.

The CSIRO Benevolent Fund is an independent body, run by volunteer staff for the benefit of all staff. We invite our staff to contribute a small amount from each pay to help support their respective fund.

CSIROCARE child care

CSIRO understands that family responsibilities can impact staff participation in the workplace. To support our employees, we provide on-site childcare at our Clayton and Black Mountain sites and offer various alternative childcare services for smaller locations. CSIROCARE centres prioritise the children of CSIRO staff, ensuring they have access to quality childcare.

Employee networks

We have a range of employee led networks where you can meet and connect with colleagues.

The Shine@CSIRO network champions the inclusion of people with disabilities and those with caring responsibilities by raising awareness, supporting peers, and challenging discrimination. We are dedicated to fostering a culture that respects, values and actively pursues the benefits of a diverse workforce. Our goal is to ensure that employees with disabilities and caring responsibilities feel fully included, valued, and supported in every aspect of their work life.

Neurodivergent employee network

The neurodivergent employee network at CSIRO is a safe haven for neurodivergent staff and affiliates to connect, support, and advocate for one another. This closed group provides a comfortable and safe space for members to share their experiences without the need to disclose personal details to the wider workforce. The network has created various resources, such as regular social catchups, to help foster and grow a supportive community.
