About the program

The Aviators in Schools program connects teachers across Australia with aviation professionals through flexible, collaborative partnerships that bring real-world insights into the classroom.

The program is designed to build students’ STEM capabilities and inspire them with the possibilities of diverse career pathways in aviation and aerospace.

Aviators in Schools is part of the STEM Professionals in Schools program, supported by the Australian Government Department of Education and the Australian Government Women in Aviation Industry Initiative, and delivered by CSIRO.

The opportunity

The Aviators in School program uses a flexible model to bring aviation expertise into classrooms, providing students with real-world insights into aviation careers while encouraging them to develop skills relevant to STEM pathways.

Through the program participants can choose how they’d like to collaborate – whether through:

  • Mentoring
  • Hosting site visits or field trips to showcase real-world STEM environments
  • Career talks
  • In-class demonstrations or hands-on activities
  • Co-developing projects that align with curriculum goals

For teachers, the program offers a practical way to connect with industry and enrich classroom learning with real-world examples and expertise that make STEM subjects come alive.

For STEM professionals, it’s an opportunity raise awareness of their field, and help build the pipeline of future STEM talent in local communities.

To ensure every partnership thrives, participants are supported with access to resources to build ongoing collaborations, and guidance from the CSIRO Education and Outreach team.

Program eligibility

Teachers

The program is freely available to registered teachers and school leaders working in Australian government or non-government primary and secondary schools.

The program prioritises schools with students from underrepresented backgrounds, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, and those from schools in lower opportunity or regional areas.

STEM professionals

We welcome STEM professionals with qualifications and/or experience in aviation, aerospace or related fields, whether academic or industry-based.

The program aims to highlight the many roles and achievements of women in aviation, so we strongly encourage women to apply. However, we welcome applications from all qualified professionals, regardless of gender. Every interaction helps showcase the diverse and rewarding career paths in aviation.

Child Safe Standards

As part of our commitment to child safety, all STEM professionals must agree to comply with CSIRO’s Child Safe Policy and undergo security screening. The program team supports professionals to obtain relevant checks, which can vary by location.

Program outcomes

Independent evaluations show that STEM Professionals in Schools partnerships deliver real benefits for teachers, students and STEM professionals through a proven industry-school engagement model.

STEM professionals describe the experience as rewarding and an opportunity to develop communication and presentation skills. Teachers report increased STEM knowledge and confidence, as well as improved student engagement and capability in STEM.
