About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Azaneo. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

Azaneo is developing pulsed electric field technology for non-chemical weed control. We are looking for an intern to help us build our first drone-image dataset and explore how computer vision could measure treatment efficacy more objectively across field trials. As an intern working at Azaneo, you will:

  • Review the protocol for capturing weed images using drone hardware
  • Organise and label the first drone-image dataset from field trials.
  • Develop and test image-analysis, computer-vision and/or machine learning methods to measure weed pressure, density, size, change, survival and regrowth.
  • Compare image-based results with manual efficacy assessments.
  • Create simple visual outputs and document the workflow for future use.
  • Assist in lab electrical work such as soldering from time-to-time.

This internship is a fantastic opportunity to build practical skills, explore your interests in sustainable agriculture, and work alongside a team passionate about innovative solutions.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: 18/10/2026
  • Working arrangement: Part-time for 200 hours
  • Remuneration: Part time contract, $26.44 per hour plus Superannuation
  • Location: Office based in Eveleigh; field site located in Cobbitty
(No car or driver’s license required- transport is provided from the office)

Desired capabilities

  • Studying Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, remote sensing or a related field
  • Experience with Python and image analysis or computer vision
  • Ability to work with imperfect real-world data and communicate results clearly
  • Interest in agriculture, field research or environmental technology
  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments for up to 8 hours during field trial days
  • Great with detail and following scientific method
  • Experience with drone imagery, GIS or segmentation models is helpful but not essential

Applicants must:

  • Be in their penultimate or final year of study in a relevant qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, or Honours level, with a current credit-average or higher

About the host workplace

Azaneo is a Sydney-based agricultural technology startup, founded in 2023 with a mission to develop innovative, sustainable solutions for modern farming challenges.

Azaneo is pioneering a sustainable approach to weed control with its innovative electrical weeding system. Their technology solution uses electroporation—high-voltage pulses that damage weed cells without chemicals. The system is weather-resilient, fully electric, and highly precise, minimising impact on non-target plants and soil. By combining eco-friendliness, efficiency, and durability, Azaneo positions itself as a leading alternative in green agricultural technology.
