Executive Director for Environment, Energy and Resources, Dr Peter Mayfield, said Dr Metcalfe’s proven record in science leadership across the environmental domain well qualified him for this key leadership role.
“We face a range of complex and interconnected environmental issues at both a national and global scale,” Dr Mayfield said.
“Dr Metcalfe brings to this role a strong combination of research leadership and stakeholder acumen relevant to this challenging domain at a key time for CSIRO and Australia.”
Dr Metcalfe has held research leadership roles supporting environmental research and impact across Australia and more recently coordinated CSIRO’s science response to the 2019/20 summer bushfires.
He has also led teams to address critical issues of drought, water allocations and extreme weather in the Murray-Darling Basin.
He has an international profile in tropical ecology and is nationally recognised for his research in sustainable environmental management.
For more than two decades he has worked in environmental management and landscape ecology and contributed to policy development, conservation appraisals and theoretical advances.
Dr Metcalfe was formerly CSIRO's Deputy Director, Land and Water, and will commence in July 2021 based in Brisbane.
