The challenge

Protecting our cereal and wine industries

Plant pathogens such as Fusarium and rust fungi and mildews cause diseases that can have major economic impacts and threaten Australia's cereal and wine industries.

Our response

Solutions to control damage

We focus our research on identifying solutions to control damage caused by these pathogens while protecting our environment. We take a multidisciplinary approach to prevent disease in the most effective way.

Below we showcase some of our projects across a range of crops to help stop pests and diseases. We are proud to help Australian farmers and industry remain profitable, and to provide solutions that are applicable to others around the globe.

Rusts and mildews case studies

  • Increasing the genetic toolbox for breeding rust resistant barley.

  • We’re working with our partner GRDC and collaborators around the globe to deliver genetic resistance to oat crown rust, a disease that can devastate oat production in Australia

  • For several decades we've been preventing crop losses by contributing to the global fight against wheat rust, a devastating fungal disease.
