The cover of a report Australia’s financial sector relies on public-key cryptography to keep payment systems and digital transactions secure. But advances in quantum computing mean some of this cryptography could become vulnerable in the future, creating an urgent need for organisations to plan their transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC).

CSIRO researchers worked with stakeholders across Australia’s payments ecosystem to explore what this transition could look like in practice. Through a national use case focused on the financial sector, the team examined key challenges including cryptographic asset discovery, migration planning, ecosystem dependencies, vendor readiness and the application of quantum-safe approaches to critical payment services.

CSIRO’s earlier report, The Quantum Safe Transition: Reality, Hurdles and Pathways, explores why transitioning to PQC is a priority for Australia's digital future and how Australians can secure the future of digital infrastructure in the post-quantum era.

This next report highlights that the transition will be a complex, multi-year effort requiring early preparation, coordinated action and detailed system-level planning.

It provides practical insights to help financial institutions and payment operators begin identifying risks, prioritising critical services and building the governance and crypto-agility needed for a quantum-safe future.
