About the placement

This internship is with Great Southern Truffles and facilitated by the CSIRO WA Food Industry Education Collaboration program (WAFEC). This internship is an exciting opportunity to work within a small business in WA's thriving truffle industry.

Over the course of 200 hours the successful applicant will leverage their expertise in food technology to contribute to New Product Development and Quality Assurance requirements. Under the supervision of the team at Great Southern Truffles, the intern will undertake ingredient sourcing, formulation trials, sensory analysis, nutritional panel profiling, and quality control activities to support the ideation and development of new products. The successful candidate will have a high willingness to learn and a creative mindset, gaining new knowledge in mycology and using truffle as an ingredient.

This is a unique opportunity to experience new product development firsthand within a supportive industry environment and translate science to real-world outcomes.

Work arrangements

Start date: November

Working arrangement: Part time for 200 hours on a casual contract, with the possibility for further employment for the right candidate

Remuneration: $31.19 per hour plus super on a casual contract with Great Southern Truffles

Location: 12/2 Powell Street, Osborne Park WA 6017

Desired capabilities

  • Keen interest in truffles and mycology
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Passion for product formulation
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team
  • Understanding of basic food chemistry and food technology
  • Knowledge of quality control testing conducted in a food environment
  • Understanding of aseptic laboratory skills and techniques
  • Ability to undertake desktop research and planning
  • Good communication skills – both with diverse audiences and mediums (written and verbal)
  • Prior experience in an aseptic laboratory or food processing / manufacturing environment will be looked on favourably

    Requirements

  • Must be currently living in Western Australia
  • Must be enrolled in a relevant Food Science or Technology university qualification (undergraduate or postgraduate)
  • Must be able to organise own travel to and from work site location
