Challenge

Cinglevue, established in 2010, is a Perth-based ICT company that support the education, health and resource sectors. Across the 11 years of operation the company has expanded from Perth to other domestic and overseas locations.

Cinglevue has a great history of R&D investment, previously working with Edith Cowan University with the assistance of an Australian Government Entrepreneurs’ Programme Innovation Connections grant and with the University of Western Australia with the assistance of a Department of Education and Training Grant. The business has also completed another SIEF STEM+ Fellowship project which commenced with the University of Technology Sydney and transitioned to Fellow Dr Alireza Ahadi at Macquarie University.

The company’s main product, Virtuoso enterprise software suite, is used for a variety of applications, widely in educational settings. The software is a fully integrated school management and enterprise learning platform that can be used for all levels of education from kindergarten to tertiary levels.

Cinglevue: Developing a framework for speech recognition and understanding in digital learning contexts

The Virtuoso software can support and enhance both teaching and learning outcomes, through this fellowship Cinglevue wish to research and develop speech recognition and understanding as another means for users to engage with the software.

Solution

Fellow Dr Denis Shitov has a proven track record with the company, previously completing an AMSI APR Internship with Cinglevue and he will continue with the company in the SIEF Ross Metcalf STEM+ Fellowship project. The project will provide Dr Shitov with many opportunities to work closely with the R&D, Product and Engineering teams. Dr Shitov will have support and guidance from Dr Jumana Abu-Khalaf and Professor David Suter at Edith Cowan University (ECU). This particular SIEF STEM+ Ross Metcalf Business Fellowship will be the first with a Western Australian university.

This project will encompass research into the areas of user authentication and attendance, provision of feedback, interface for system interaction, a medium for engaging with learning and assessment tasks and specific assessment or diagnostics based on student speech. The subsequent focus will be on developing a framework that can support all of the above areas and future needs.

The expected outcomes will give Cinglevue a competitive edge over competing vendors, especially if speech becomes a natural means to interact with the system.

Results

The project is currently on track at the six month point with Dr Shitov gaining experience working directly with education domain specialists and business analysts to start the process of turning research outcomes into marketable products.

Both the project and program have exceeded our expectations thus far and enabled us to realise outcomes that would not be possible otherwise. A recent example would be the incorporation of the Research Fellow’s speech recognition research to develop a reading assessment capability for primary students, where this will be implemented and made available as part of our next platform release later this year.

The program is excellent and a much-needed initiative in Australia in helping bring together industry and academia for the purposes of commercialising research. Continuing to develop and expand the program further would provide significant value to research students as well as the business and university sectors.

Dr Michael Garrett, Head of Research & Innovation, Cinglevue International

This program is supported by the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF).
