Addressing agricultural & environmental challenges through advanced bioengineering

Advanced bioengineering solutions can harness the power of biological processes to improve agricultural productivity, detect and control pest and disease threats, reduce traditional agrochemical use, remediate land and water, and improve animal welfare.

Supporting farm-gate output to $100 billion by 2030

CSIRO's 2021 National Synthetic Biology Roadmap found that the successful commercialisation of advanced bioengineering solutions for Australia's food and agriculture sector could unlock up to $19.2 billion in annual revenue and 31,200 new jobs for Australia by 2040.

Preliminary opportunity analysis of bioengineering solutions for Australian producers

AgriFutures Australia engaged CSIRO to better understand the potential application of bioengineering solutions for Australian producers and associated benefits to inform future R&D investments in this space. This assessment included a consideration of current technical and commercial maturity, key challenges to reaching commercial maturity, and the primary benefits over existing products.

The report found that while many of these approaches have an existing commercially available product, their application is limited globally. The report delved into specific development opportunities across all eight solutions and provided guidance on the analysis required to further investigate these areas.

Opportunities

The eight opportunities include: Engineered biosensors for product quality, Engineered biosensors for animal and crop health, Bio manufactured animal feed, Biomanufactured agricultural chemicals, Engineered bioremediation solutions, Engineered biological agricultural treatments, Engineered biosensors for environmental conditions and On-farm bioenergy solutions

The eight opportunities include:

  • Engineered biosensors for product quality
  • Engineered biosensors for animal and crop health
  • Bio manufactured animal feed
  • Biomanufactured agricultural chemicals
  • Engineered bioremediation solutions
  • Engineered biological agricultural treatments
  • Engineered biosensors for environmental conditions
  • On-farm bioenergy solutions
