The challenge

Droughts are a recurrent event in Australia

Droughts are well-known in Australia with far-reaching impacts, affecting communities, agriculture, ecosystems and the national economy.

In future, more frequent and severe droughts are predicted for many parts of Australia. And southern Australia is expected to experience less rainfall in general.

Reducing the impacts of drought for farmers and communities.

This pressing national challenge requires new responses to improve Australia's preparedness and resilience before the next drought.

A broad perspective that considers the needs of different stakeholders is required to build economic, environmental and social resilience against drought.

Our response

An integrated, national approach

We are working with government, industry, community, research and investment partners to reduce the impacts of drought.

We are investing in exploratory projects, as well as working with partners to investigate ways to reduce the impacts of future droughts and build drought resilience.

Reducing drought impacts case studies

  • National indicators could be used by government and agricultural advisors to understand the extent and severity of drought impacts on agriculture to inform preparedness, response and recovery.

  • My Climate View is a digital information product that provides commodity and location-specific climate predictions for Australian farmers for the next 50 years.

  • We were engaged by the Australian Government's Future Drought Fund (FDF) to bring a resilience science perspective to regional drought resilience planning to help Australian communities better prepare for and respond to drought.

  • Indigenous cultural knowledge and environmental insight built over many generations are increasingly being recognised as key to managing Australia’s environment and ongoing stewardship of the Country.

  • Brackish groundwater systems, which contain elevated salt levels, are alternative water resources can be desalinated and used at times when freshwater sources are low or unavailable.

  • Improved livestock ranking for better destocking decisions through the drought cycle.

  • We are establishing droughts' direct and indirect economic costs in Australia to inform a baseline for improving drought resilience.

  • We are integrating new varieties of wheat suitable for dry conditions into production systems.

  • We developed Anameka Saltbush as an ideal supplementary feed for livestock through years of research and development with government and industry. It’s now being expanded to new regions across Australia to improve farmers’ drought resilience.

  • We are driving water banking initiatives to increase water security in some of Australia’s most drought-affected regions.
