Meet Brodie
Brodie is joining a biodiversity survey voyage in the Coral Sea and is the eighth recipient of an Indigenous Time at Sea Scholarship. She is a proud Torres Strait Islander with family connections from Saibai Island.
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Science in Coastal and Marine Science and Environmental Management at Curtin University, Perth, WA. My passion lies in ocean conservation, Indigenous knowledge, sustainable development, marine research, and managing marine ecosystems.
I grew up in the small regional town of Pemberton, WA, far from my Torres Strait Islander roots. Living away from Sea Country has created a sense of cultural disconnection, but it has also inspired me to pursue marine science as a way of reconnecting with my heritage and the ocean. This voyage as an ITSS student on the Coral Sea offers me a unique opportunity to connect more deeply with Sea Country while contributing to world-class research on deep-sea biodiversity and allowing me the opportunity to give back to my community.
I have been lucky to have experience in a wide range of marine and environmental projects with CSIRO's CarbonLock Project, the Locally Managed Marine Areas Network in Fiji, and international research programs in South Africa and Nepal. This voyage marks my first time aboard a scientific research vessel, and opens countless opportunities for me in a research career.
I am excited to combine culture, science, and research to strengthen Indigenous voices and representation in marine research. I acknowledge I am a role model in my community, and I hope this opportunity will inspire other young Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal students to see themselves in STEM.
Brodie's voyage
Brodie joins fellow ITSS student, Madison Duce, on the fifth ITSS voyage on RV Investigator. The voyage departs Brisbane on 10 October 2025 and will spend 36 days at sea surveying the deep-sea biodiversity of the Coral Sea. The voyage will end in Brisbane on 14 November 2025.
