Meet Madison
Madison is joining a biodiversity survey voyage in the Coral Sea and is the ninth recipient of an Indigenous Time at Sea Scholarship. She is, from her mother's side, a proud Awabakal woman with connections to the Hunter and Newcastle region.
My name is Madi. I'm currently completing a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts at Macquarie University, majoring in Biotechnology and Politics. I grew up on Darkinjung land on the Central Coast of NSW, where the lake and ocean have always been part of my everyday life. These places have shaped who I am and nurtured my love for Country, community, and nature.
The water has always been my grounding place. Spending my life by the lake and sea has inspired not only my sense of belonging but also a strong desire to protect and better understand the environments that sustain us. I hope to carry this forward in both my academic work and future career, finding ways to weave Indigenous knowledge and modern science into more inclusive and sustainable approaches.
Madison's voyage
Madison joins fellow ITSS student, Brodie O'Breza, on the fifth ITSS voyage on RV Investigator. The voyage departs Brisbane on 10 October 2025 and will spend 36 days at sea surveying the deep-sea biodiversity of the Coral Sea. The voyage will end in Brisbane on 14 November 2025.
