About the placement

This NSW Skills for Net Zero internship is with Square by Square Pty Limited. The initiative is proudly funded by the NSW Government and delivered by CSIRO.

As an intern working at Square by Square, you will be as a full-stack software engineering intern, contributing to the production platform that powers our rainforest protection model. The role would involve building and improving real features across the live website, map, Shopify storefront, supporter experience and internal automation systems.

Key activities may include improving the public map and supporter-facing pages, strengthening the buying and gifting flow, optimising performance and discoverability of the single-page application, and helping build new features that make the climate and conservation impact easier for supporters to understand and share.

On the back end, the intern may contribute to systems that connect each Square to GPS coordinates, partner data, certificate generation, transactional emails and platform integrations. They would work with GitHub, VS Code and modern AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code as part of a supervised engineering workflow.

By the end of the placement, the intern should have a portfolio of shipped work they can demonstrate, experience working in a small startup team, and a clearer understanding of how STEM skills can be applied to nature-based decarbonisation and conservation technology.
